What Is The Process Of Child Adoption?

As you are moving into the next stage of life, you might be thinking of getting a child, and adoption is one of your choices available. We’re not going to lie, the adoption process can be lengthy and tiring, but it is essential to ensure the kids and you are compatible and are able to form a family.

For any child adoption, you will need to go through an organisation. We highly recommend St Davids Adoption Service as they provide top-notch service to ensure your adoption process is smooth like butter.

Step 1: Find An Organisation Or Adoption Centre

To adopt a child, it is mandatory to adopt through a qualified organisation or adoption centre. Whether you are ready or not, it is always recommended to have a consultation session with the agencies to gain more insights and know about the process of adoption.

It is highly recommended to contact multiple adoption centres, up to 4 or 5 to ensure you are getting enough information and choices. Starting a family is definitely not easy, which is why you should be careful in every step of the way.

Step 2: Registration

When you have finally decided to adopt a child, you will need to choose an adoption centre and register your interest. They will undergo some background checks on you to determine whether or not you are a good fit for the programme such as criminal background checks and checks from local authorities. 3 References are also needed, 2 of them must come from non-family members.

However, do note that you will only be able to register once under one organisation or adoption centre. Although it’s just the first step, we highly recommend engaging the organisation that you are the most comfortable with right from the start, as they will be the ones guiding you ahead in this long journey.

Step 3: Training

To make sure that you have the skills required to be a good parent, the organisation will conduct mandatory training programmes for first time adopters. During the training process, the organisation will be closely assessing you, making sure you are fit to become an adopter.

Once you registered your interest and passed the background track, the organisation will plan out the training and assessment details for you to agree on. You will need to work out the training dates between each other for you to get the required training, and allowing the organisation to prepare your reports.

After the training process, your assessment details will be brought up to the panel to be reviewed. Once you have been approved, you are one step closer to becoming a parent.

Step 4: Searching For “The One”

Once the approval process has been done, you will be assigned to a social worker who will be assisting you in picking your new child. The most common question is – how long will it take to search for a child? Well, you might hate the answer – it depends.

Once you are approved, the first thing the social workers will look into is to see if there are any children waiting to be adopted from the organisation. If there are, your adoption process will be sped up significantly.

During the search process, you will need to create a personal profile that gives a brief introduction of you, or of you and your spouse. List out your preference and interests and showcase some skills or facts about yourself for social workers and the children to know you better.

Step 5: Family

Once you have chosen your child, it’s time to form a family together!

Worried about your first encounter with your child? Don’t worry too much, your assigned social worker will help both of you break the ice.

Before the child officially moves into your home, it’s recommended for you to have a small chat and get to know each other in the foster home, as it is much more comfortable for the child. You can also bring the child for activities like walking in the park or playing a sport together.

Conclusion

It’s understandable that as a new adoptive parent, it can get overwhelming. However, always remember that organisations such as St David Adoption Services are always there to help you out. Just simply follow the procedures step by step, and get into the next stage of life!
